Heart Conditions & Operations

What is the function of the Heart ?
The heart is a muscular pump that is divided into two sides. The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs to get oxygen, and the left side pumps oxygenated blood around the body.

Heart Conditions
Valvular Heart Disease: Is the term given to the conditions in which the hearts valves fail to function properly. This can occur when a valve allows blood to travel the wrong way. This is known as Mitral Valve Prolapse. This can often result in the replacement of the Mitral Valve with a prosthetic valve. In other cases the Aortic valve may be too narrow, this is known as -

Aortic Stenosis: As a result of the Aortic valve being too narrow the heart must work harder to pump blood, this causes an increased amount of strain on the heart.

Ventricular Tachycardia: is a potentially lethal disruption of normal heartbeat (arrhythmia) that may cause the heart to become unable to pump adequate blood through the body. The heart rate may be 160 to 240 (normal is 60 to 100 beats per minute).

What is Atrial Fibrillation (AF)?: The heart’s two small upper chambers (the atria) quiver instead of beating effectively. Blood isn’t pumped completely out of them, so it may pool and clot. If these clots escape and lodge in an artery in the brain a stroke results.
