Black women ‘at increased cancer risk’
Black women are at an increased risk of a certain type of aggressive breast cancer, according to new research.
A study in the journal Breast Cancer Research indicated that black women are three times more likely to develop a ‘triple negative tumour’ compared to females of other racial backgrounds.
Experts noted that, while a higher proportion of white women contract breast cancer in the US, the disease is often more advanced when diagnosed in their black counterparts.
Dr Carol Rosenberg from Boston University School of Medicine said: "Previously, it was known that pre-menopausal black women had more triple negative tumours.
"What we found that was new was that these tumours were just as common in black women diagnosed before or after age 50, and in those who were or were not obese."
A report presented at a recent American Chemical Society meeting suggested that hollow gold nanospheres could be highly-effective in the fight against cancer.
