Patients cured of cancer ‘on the rise’
The number of people being cured of cancer in Europe is on the increase, according to new data.
Research on the subject published in the European Journal of Cancer compared two periods, 1988-1990 and 1997-1999.
It indicated that the proportion of patients estimated to have been cured of lung, stomach and colorectal cancers rose from six to eight per cent, from 15 to 18 per cent and 42 to 49 per cent respectively.
Commenting on the findings, Dr Riccardo Capocaccia of the National Centre for Epidemiology, Surveillance and Health Promotion in Italy, said: "Increases between 1988-1990 and 1997-1999 in the estimated proportion of European patients cured of lung, stomach and colorectal cancers are noteworthy."
He noted that the increase was not affected by ‘led time’ - earlier diagnosis without improvement in life expectancy – adding that the trend represents "genuine progress" in control of the disease.
It was recently reported that hollow gold nanospheres could be highly-effective in the fight against cancer.
