Frankincense oil ‘could treat bladder cancer’

Frankincense could be used as an alternative treatment for bladder cancer, medical experts have claimed.

A new study has indicated that the resin – which has been harvested and traded in Africa, India and the Middle East for about 5,000 years – can kill off cells associated with the disease.

HK Lin and his team of researchers from the University of Oklahoma published the findings in the open access journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

According to the study, the oil halted the growth of the cancer cells before going on to eradicate them.

Dr Lin said: "Frankincense oil may represent an inexpensive alternative therapy for patients currently suffering from bladder cancer."

Bladder cancer is currently the seventh most common cause of death among British men.

A recent study conducted in the UK of 52,700 men and women suggested that people with a vegetarian diet could be less prone to developing cancer.
