80% receive cancer jab

A vaccination that protects against cervical cancer has been given to more than 80 per cent of Derbyshire’s 12 and 13 year old girls, it has emerged.

The Primary Care Trust allocates the success to an 18-month awareness campaign, but acknowledged that Jade Goody’s illness had raised its profile.

Girls are being advised to complete the three jab course, with the PCT sending out text reminders about follow-up vaccinations, reports the BBC.

Linda Syson-Nibbs, immunisation co-ordinator at the trust, said the take-up rates had been "fantastic".

"However, it is not too late for those girls who chose not to have the first jab. They can still come forward and protect themselves from infection."

The Derbyshire programme will be expanded to all 21,584 girls aged between 12 and 18 in the region later this year.

A UK study recently claimed that people with a vegetarian diet could be less prone to developing cancer.
