Private obesity surgery ‘on the rise’
An increasing number of patients in the UK are undergoing private obesity surgery, according to new figures.
The National Obesity Surgery Centre has opened three new clinics and taken on more staff to cope with growing demand.
Many patients are becoming frustrated with NHS’s inability to cope with the growing number of people seeking such treatment.
According to the group, it has performed more of this kind of procedure than ever over the last 12 months.
Barrie Crabtree, director of the National Obesity Surgery Centre, commented: "In addition to the well-publicised increase in adult obesity levels - now standing at one in four UK adults - the risks associated with obesity are becoming more prevalent in the news."
She added that there appears to be a "greater awareness" that action needs to be taken to tackle the problem.
A recent US study claimed that obese women who are pregnant with their first child are at a higher risk of experiencing a complicated birth.
