Oversleeping linked to weight gain

Seven hours of sleep a night could be the optimum amount in preventing excessive weight gain, according to new research.

A study by Laval University in Quebec discovered that too much or too little sleep can lead to weight gain, even ending in obesity.

Those sleeping for less than seven hours a night gained four pounds in six years, while those sleeping for more gained three pounds over the same period, according to the research.

Researcher Jean-Philippe Chaput said that short and long sleeping times "predict an increased risk of future body weight and fat gain in adults."

"Furthermore, these results emphasise the need to add sleep duration to the list of environmental factors that are prevalent in our society and that contribute to weight gain and obesity," he added

Around one third of UK adults regularly sleep five hours or less a night, with the average being seven hours.
