Team aim to ’switch off breast cancer’

Researchers at Cardiff University are leading the way in the fight against breast cancer.

Professor Trevor Dale and his team are examining the role of a molecule named Wnt in the development of breast cancer.

The molecule is only active during puberty and pregnancy when it encourages breast stem cells to grow into new cells, effectively switching off once this process has taken place.

According to Professor Dale, genetic alterations in breast stem cells can reactivate this molecule, which then fosters cancerous cells.

Commenting on the issue, Professor Dale said: "My research aims to work out how Wnt is switched off after puberty and pregnancy so that treatments can be developed to mimic this action in breast cancer."

The research is being funded by the Breast Cancer Campaign, the charity that aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-leading research.
