Breast cancer breakthrough
Scientists have revealed a discovery that could stop the spreading of breast cancer, the most common form of cancer in the UK.
The new findings pave the way for the development of drugs which could halt the spread of the disease and save the lives of some 44,000 women diagnosed with the condition every year.
Metastasis is the process when the disease is at its most dangerous, as the cancer disbands from the breast and prompts tumours to grow in other parts of the body.
However, scientists have been able to pinpoint and remove this gene from cancer cells which then halts its growth.
Dr Sarah Cant, policy manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, commented: "This is a very interesting study which provides us with new information about how aggressive breast cancer tumours may grow and spread. However it is important to remember that this research looked at cancer cells grown in the lab and is at a very early stage."
Breakthrough Breast Cancer is a UK charity committed to fighting breast cancer through research, campaigning and education.
The Insurance Helpline specialises in obtaining cover for people living with cancer.
