Breast cancer insurance difficulties highlighted
This weekend saw one breast cancer survivor with experience of insurance difficulties speak out at a charity event.
Kari Moroz from the US had no health cover when she found a lump in her breast last year, with her cancer already so far advanced when she realised she had it that she needed a mastectomy.
The 30 year old mother-of-two turned to a local organisation offering help to breast cancer sufferers with low incomes.
"We didn’t find her cancer, and we certainly didn’t fix it for her, but we did provide child care," Pam Scott, the executive director of Project Woman Coalition told Oklahoma’s NewsOk.com.
The publication highlighted a study by the Cancer medical journal showing that uninsured women are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced-stage breast cancer than insured women, with women without insurance less likely to have regular breast examinations.
After speaking at Oklahoma’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Ms Moroz advised all cancer sufferers to look into the insurance options available for people in high-risk groups or with medical conditions.
