Insurance difficulties for Territorial Army members

People who undertake high risk pastimes such as being a member of the Territorial Army can find life insurance providers looking on them unfavourably.

Steve Couch, of specialist IFA Trafalgar Mortgage and Financial Services, explained that the insurance underwriter’s view could depend on how much time a member devotes to the TA.

Two or three weeks a year may not have an adverse affect but "if they are dedicating four or five months a year then that could have an impact on the life company’s view.

"At the end of the day the accepting of the cover and the level of risk will be dependent on the underwriter and their view on whether to accept the risk; this in turn will dictate if there is to be a premium loading or not."

The TA has just over 30,000 members according to the All-Party Reserve Forces Group. Anyone between the ages of 16 and 32 (and sometime those over the age of 32) can join and members must serve a minimum of 27 days per year.
